Chapter 4

On the Monday after Christmas, the year Brian was killed, Tracy and Mrs. Lincoln left Jasmine with Angel and Hubert and returned to Brigham. The first thing they did was to call a realtor friend of Mrs. Lincoln and place Tracy’s house on the market. Mrs. Lincoln let Mr. Lincoln know their former family home was available for sale.

Helping each other pack up the items they absolutely had to take back to Lapwai forced the women to make the tough decisions about what was necessary in their new lives. For Tracy, it wasn’t much, just the books and a few mementos, photo albums, her jewelry, and Jasmine’s toys. Her furniture was newer, but it was nothing special, and she debated even bothering with it.

“Ask Angel if she wants it,” Mrs. Lincoln had said, and neither mentioned that anything would be better than what the couple currently had: threadbare, out of style, and ready for the dumpster.

Fortunately, Tracy’s home sold quickly, and Mrs. Lincoln’s husband bought her out of theirs. The contents went into storage until they found houses to rent in Lapwai that were within walking distance of Angel and Hubert’s.

“My ex thinks I’ve lost my mind,” Mrs. Lincoln said, smiling.

“Good!” Angel exclaimed. “He deserves to be good and worried.”

Moving days came within a week of each other. First Tracy and Jasmine moved into their little two-bedroom bungalow with office, and then a week later, Mrs. Lincoln moved into hers, a larger, newer place. The neighbors were there to help shift furniture around from the moving trucks to the houses. As the old stuff from Angel and Hubert’s was placed at the curb, it was quickly picked up to be used by yet another family.

“Look at this place!” Angel cried, running her hands over Tracy and Brian’s castoffs. “It looks so swanky!”

“It looks just like my old house, Grandma,” Jasmine said excitedly. “If I get homesick, I can visit you.”

“I hope you come all the time,” Hubert said.
